I'm in Utah!
Animal Behavior Conference: Day One

I feel so good right now. I just got back from hanging out in the steam room with some of the other Turner Award students. I am so relaxed I think I could actually fall asleep without pills for once in my life. Tomorrow I have to get up at 8am for a series of lectures on all sorts of aspects of animal behavior that go until sometime in the evening. It's going to be so hard to sit an pay attention all day but I really want to get as much as I can out of this event. But of coarse any free time I have will be spent at the spa

Tuesday I have to give a poster presentation on my research. I don't have to talk in front of a group which is nice but I'll have to stand by my poster and answer any questions people have. It shouldn't be too bad but I'm going to reread a bunch of papers relating to my subject so hopefully I will sound like I actually know what I'm talking about.

On a random note...the air in Utah sucks. I'm not sure how high of an elevation I am at but it's been painful to breath up here. I actually got here yesterday and I woke up last night with my nose and throat burning. It felt like I had just snorted a ton of coke (not that I've ever done that but am assuming the feeling is similar).

sounds cool. have fun there.

coke doesn't work like that as i remember. i'm guessing there's a lot less humidity than what you're used to.

Thanks.

Yeah I was just guessing about the coke thing from what people I know who have done it told me. I never would have guessed the air in Utah was so much dryer than in MA but appearently it is.

I'm sure you'll do great on the presentation.

If you can't breath well try laying around with a wash rag over your face for a while. It should help with your sinuses drying out.

Thanks, I'm sure I'll do ok. It's just intimidating to be one of only a few undergrads surrounded by people with PHD's.

Utah's pretty high up their, but and I are from NM which is a little higher up.  Moving to TX and then to NC and MD had the opposite effect, the air is so thick down near the coast that I felt like I was sufocatign.

The resort I'm at is about 8000 feet above sea level which is way more than I'm used to. I'm actually hoping it will improve my lung capacity or at least not have any adverse affects on me whan I get back.

you should try running at that Alt., after a while it will do wonders for your lungs.
