Actually, Misty May's ass's appearance makes the Olympics newsworthy. We all should be able to agree on that.

Werd. Falling and nonsense....I think it's just frustration at their injuries so close to qualifications. The announcers were really upset at the lower-than-16 scores for 2 of the US's flawless beam routines as well.
Also, did you see that poor Chinese girl vault and land on her back? Freaking ouch.
Also, the 4 x 400 relay!! It was so flipping exciting. I like when they win and scream and are oh, so happy. And when the French hang their heads in disbelief after being all cocky on international television.

I was getting so upset I had to keep walking away from the tv. Now, granted, I could never do any of the things these girls do... so I'm not really in a position to complain or whatever...
But they aren't just representing themselves, they are representing all of us, and after 2 of our best go out of bounds on floor, and another falls off the bars... it was almost like I was embarassed.
I've been looking forward to women's gymnastics for years... i follow it very closely... it just really ticked me off.
I hope they take the next few days to get their heads together.

Now I am very confused. I am watching the synchronized platform diving, and they are clearly saying that Thomas Daley from Great Britain is only 14. Wasn't there a bunch of hullabaloo that one of the Chinese female gymnasts was reported to be 14, and that is illegal in the games because the minimum age is 16?
Also, one announcer just asked the other why the divers go directly to the showers after a dive, and she says, "...to get warm, and also to stay loose...and have fun." Uh, what? They had just finished talking about how young these kids are, and now she's all "young boys take showers together to have fun"

I could definitely be wrong... since I didn't bother looking it up... but I kept hearing/reading them say that gymnasts have to be 16, I never heard them say that Olympic athletes in general have to be 16...
now i'm gonna go look it up.
EDIT:
Okay... I looked it up... It seems that the only real age requirement is in gymnastics and that the rest of the sports don't really have one. Most things I read cited the fact that Britain has a 14 year old diver as an example.
Edited by smalltownjuliet on : 8/11/2008 8:19 PM I looked up the info in question. |

Yes, in Gymnastics, all Olympic competitors must turn at least 16 the year of the games. I read at least one interview with, I believe, a former US gymnastics coach complaining that he was pretty sure some of the female members on the Chinese team were between 12-14 in age.
While I'm sure I'd be naive, at best, to think that China is the only country out there exploiting it's citizens like this for the sake of these games, it really sickens me how blatant they are about it. They truly don't give a flying fuck about these girls... or any of their athletes. As long as these athletes can bring glory to their country, that's all they care about. And when the bodies of these young athletes finally give out from so many years of being pushed so hard, they just throw them away and find someone else to step up and take their place. I get the feeling this is what'll end up happening to Yao Ming when his body finally gives in and China ends up cutting his professional career short. |
