KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- A shotgun-wielding man opened fire at a Unitarian church during a children's play Sunday morning, killing one adult and wounding eight others before being overpowered by worshippers, police said.

Jim Adkisson, 58, of Powell, Tennessee, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, Knoxville municipal spokesman Randy Kenner said Sunday evening.

Adkisson is not believed to have been a member of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, and investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen told reporters.

there was something similar on the radio last night. i'm not a fan of hate crime legislation either but something is prompting the police to allude to it in this case. could be actual interviews with the shooter and could be a DA wanting to pad a case. just saying, there is speculation he was having internal dialogues on the permissiveness of the church in his community.
