My favorite authors are the ones I grew up with -- Bradbury, Vonnegut, Bach. J.K. Rowling...I'm obsessed with Harry Potter. James Frey, Palahniuk, Orson Scott Card, David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs...I read anything I can get my hands on. It helps that I grew up with a librarian for a mom :D

we are all obsessed with harry potter i think.

So, I know we have a spot for our favorite books etc in our profile, but It hought maybe we could start a little thread about the books/authors/genres that we like.

Im really getting into the HDF arena right now, I really enjoy reading material by Poppy Z. Brite (we named our puppy after her), Kathe Koja, and Caitlin R. Kiernan.

Im currently reading both Interview with a vampire (Ive never read the vampire chronicles), and "Murder of Angels" by Caitlin R Kiernan.

Depending on my mood dependson what I pick up.
I have tried twice and failed to completely read "House of Leaves", but one of these days I will complete it.

I know we have several writers on the site, so what do you like to read, who is on your current read list, what genre do you write in?

Speaking of Anne Rice, did you hear she has gone off the deep end and become a hardcore devout christian? Her current project, which she considers her masterpiece, is a history of christianity. Crazy.

I am currently reading Junot Diaz's Drown. It is very good, but it is borderline mysogenistic. Sorry if I didn't spell it correctly. The voice within the interconnecting narratives is strong. overall, It's great writing. If you like latino writing, then this is a writer you should check out.

Oh yeah. the whole ann rice thing wouldn't be so bad except how she has talked poorly about the readers of her previous books b/c of how dark they were. let's go ahead and alieanate ourselves from the current readers. and then it's a speculative fiction book about the childhood of christ that has been dumbed down. does she think the church is really going to embrase it?

Unfortunately I don't get to read all that many books these days. I work in publishing so the majority of my reading time is spent with the funny books. I end up reading and rereading Philip K. Dick stories whenever I get a chance though. Still waiting for a decent post-Blade Runner adaptation.

At least you get to read fun stuff!!

I work in publishing, too. I read a lot of boring terrorist thrillers and memoirs written by old people who think their lives are fascinating because they had a stroke.

Heh... I hear ya. I shouldn't complain. Sometimes I don't feel I'm up on literature like I should be, but at least I can tell you who the best comic book artists are out there.

You should read "the Mayfair Witches"..this book was by far my favorite Anne Rice book...except maybe the Sleeping Beauty series(erotica)...but she used a different name for those.

the witching hour was really good...but as you progressed by the third one they were just weird. i did LOVE the sleeping beauty series. beautifully sexy and perverse.

Vonnegut, hands down. I've loved every book by him that I've read.

Ursula K. Leguin, Tolkien and Raymond E. Feist are up there, too.

i want to marry them.

in a related note i am reading simone de beauvoir right now, because she was romantically involved with sartre. HOT PHILOSOPHIC ACTION.

Sartre is amazing, and I am happy to find that the English translations are really really good. De Beavoir is great too, I just finished "L'Invitee"
